with republicans to increase taxes on wealthier americans, after a show of bipartisanship. the president inviting mitt romney to the white house on thursday. with washington deadlocked, president obama reached out to his former rival, inviting mitt romney to lunch at the white house, aiming to put past differences to rest. >> i think that he's very interested in some of governor romney's ideas. >> reporter: romney arrived shortly after noon thursday. white house officials revealed few details about the lunch, saying only they ate white turkey chili, and the meeting lasted more than an hour, with governor romney congratulating the president on re-election. in the sole picture released by the white house, you can see the dining room where the men ate and boxing gloves. aides joked there were no punches thrown describing the encounter as friendly. >> i am happy to see this picture, it is good for the american people. >> reporter: a very different tone on capitol hill as fiscal cliff negotiations remain rocky. the president sent his top negotiator, treasury secretary tim geithner to meet with congres

the workers on the job, bring back tax revenue for local governments to repair, rebuild and restore a sense of normalcy for our commitments. we already were at over 9% unemployment before the storm, and if history teaches us anything from hurricane katrina, it is that unemployment dramatically rose subsequently. that is a big challenge. to economically rebuild new jersey, we also need to rebuild thier is si shore, and that is -- that's a $38 billion tourism economy in our state. and the jersey shore isn't just about summer homes. that sometimes is, you know, a huge misconception. it has been transformed into year-round communities. the next two slides show the importance of some of what senator schumer was talking about, army corps on our shoreline. stockton college did a study of the army corps' beach engineering programs before and after the storm, and what it found was unambiguous. where the army corps was able to complete a beach-engineered project, the dunes held. and the damage to commitments behind -- to communities behind the projects was either negligible or manageable. so here's a
